Out And About

This past Wednesday, Sept. 10th, the children and I attended Lois Sabo-Skelton's presentation "Music as Communication: American Fiddle Music in Serbia" at the Monroe County Public Library.

The program was part of the Ivy Tech-Bloomington's Center for Lifelong Learning program, organized by Director, Susie Graham. http://cll.bloomington.ivytech.edu/

Lois, a Doctor of Music Education, traveled to Serbia in the fall of 2007 with a group of humanitarian ambassadors. Their mission was to deliver aid to children. Lois was the groups' sole musician and Wednesday we discovered how live music had a healing affect on the survivors of a war ravaged nation! This indeed proves music to truly be our universal language! Attendees then celebrated at Ragazzi Arte Cafe downtown.

On Friday, September 12th, I accompanied my daughter's 5th grade class to Falls of the Ohio State Park and saw rich fossil remnants of our ever changing world!

Located on the banks of the Ohio River in Clarksville, Indiana...the 386-million-year-old fossil beds are among the largest naturally exposed Devonian fossil beds in the world. The park features a spectacular interpretive center overlooking the fossil beds containing an exhibit gallery and video presentation.

Hands on ventures into nature is an important aspect to eduction at Harmony School. http://www.harmonyschool.org/www/index.html

Our philosophy emphasizes not just eduction but personal growth as a means of increasing students' power to contribute to society.

This important perspective was articulated in the book, I Love Dirt! 52 Activities to Help You & Your Child Discover the Wonders of Nature, written by Jennifer Ward. It has a forward by Richard Louv, author of Last Child in the Woods.

And speaking of Harmony moms...Laura Marks, one of the two founders of Mother Hubbard's Cupboard, Bloomington's local food pantry, was featured in Bloom Magazine's September edition. I've known Laura and her two darling, blond daughter's for several years!

The subject of hunger and poverty in our community was brought to the forefront of our attention by this morning's newspaper headline, Report: 40% of city in poverty

This news is certainly worrisome for all of us!

Tomorrow, I will be attending the Indiana Forest Alliance's annual retreat for board members. We will be discussing various initiatives for the coming year. And then at 4 PM the same day, I will dash out to Dr. and Karen Stone's home for the Valeri Haughton, Julie Thomas and Elizabeth Cure fund raiser.
